Blue Planet team rider Zane Saenz won the national SUP Surfing U18 title for the second time in a row, here is his recap:
|On June 14 USA Surfing held the USA SUP Surfing and Technical Racing Championships! I arrived there fairly early to scope out the conditions and see what my game plan would be for the surfing and racing events.
I took a little paddle around to feel out the conditions before the race which was the first event. I got back to shore where SUP Champion Candice Appleby explained to us the race course, which was two rounds around a triangle in and out of the surf.
The race started and we all ran in beach start style. Zane Schweitzer took a little early lead at the start and was the first to turn the first buoy. I was a bit behind but there came a little wave and I caught it to catch up a bit. We ran around the flag on the sand and on the way out there was a set. We went over the waves well and kept going around the outside buoys. On the way in I got a decent set that was one of the bigger ones of the day that closed out on the shallow sand bar and I fell. I paddled in to the race line and ended up getting third in the U18.
Next up was the men’s round 1 SUP Surfing and In was up against Zane Schweitzer and Daniel Hughes. In our heat the waves were really not cooperating and we all struggled to catch a wave. I was only able to catch one and the others caught a couple and passed on to the next round.
Lastly I had the U18 SUP Surfing Finals. The waves were more consistent during this event because the tide got lower. I caught almost 10 waves and just focused on hitting lip the end section as hard as I could to get the scores since it had the most potential. It was enough and I won the U18 Championships!
It was such an amazing experience to be back in Oceanside for this event which is always a lot of fun. I was stoked to do the technical race for the first time with amazing athletes of the sport and defend my title to win my second USA SUP Surfing Championships. I'm really grateful for my sponsors for all their support, for providing me with great equipment, specially Blue Planet for my magic boards which makes all the difference and for giving me this opportunity to go back and win another National title.
